The Strathclyde Student Pledge

Dear Strathclyde Student

We have all endured a period of unprecedented disruption to daily life, unlike anything experienced in recent times. I would like to thank you for the tremendous resilience and focus you have shown over the last few months under intense pressure and uncertainty.

I understand you will have many questions on how your studies will be shaped and delivered in the coming academic year.  We want to address this uncertainty directly so that we can provide you with clarity on what this will mean for your study with us, as well as your wider student experience as part of the Strathclyde community.

I hope that this Pledge from us, to you, provides you with detail and reassurance regarding our preparations for the new academic year, commencing in September 2020. These preparations will include the learning experience you will have, and the measures we will have in place to ensure your health, safety and wellbeing at all times in parallel with a wonderful Strathclyde education.

Please be assured that the entire Strathclyde community is fully committed to ensuring and delivering to you the highest quality learning and student experience and my colleagues and I are very much looking forward to welcoming you on campus in the near future.

Our pledge to you. We will provide all Strathclyde students with:

1. A safe and secure campus environment

Your health, safety and wellbeing are our top priorities. The campus and our accommodation are being reconfigured to provide appropriate social distancing, including in our laboratories, teaching areas, walkways and social spaces, so that you can enjoy our campus in a safe way as we introduce you to life at Strathclyde.

2. A first-class learning experience

We will maintain the highest quality learning and teaching experience, with your interests at the heart of our decision making.

At Strathclyde, we have extensive experience in delivering a high quality online experience, developed over many years. We understand what works in the online environment and the importance of interaction between you and your peers and lecturers. This experience is informing our preparations for your arrival with us in September. You might find it helpful to see examples of how we approach online learning, these are available on our Strathclyde Online Learning pages:

3. An active student life

A large part of the student experience is the social interaction, making friends and enjoying being part of our clubs and societies. While campus life will be different for a while, please rest assured you will still be able to immerse yourself in student life from the moment you arrive.

We're working closely with our Student Union to bring you an excellent student experience. Alongside this, we are creating a tailored online induction programme to help introduce you to Strathclyde, find out more about University life and make new friends in this unique situation.

4. Ongoing Advice and Support

Beginning your university life is an exciting experience and we understand that you may feel nervous or overwhelmed especially as these unprecedented times have brought much uncertainty.

We will support you at every stage of this new learner journey from pre-arrival and throughout your time with us. We provide a wide range of academic support and mentoring programmes to help you transition to university learning, including study skills workshops, careers guidance, additional English language support, maths skills drop in sessions as well as a wide range of wellbeing services, including access to mental health services.

5. A welcoming and inclusive environment

Our campus is based right in the heart of the city of Glasgow, which was named by National Geographic as one of its 'Best of the World' destinations, and Rough Guide readers have voted Glasgow the ‘world’s friendliest city’.

We want you to enjoy the city and feel safe too, and Glasgow City council has introduced new measures to support physical distancing in the city centre including widened footways and a new cycling infrastructure.
